The Key to Sustainability
In April 2023, EnerSys, was awarded the Better Practice Award from the Better Plants Program for the implementation of the EnerSys Operating System (EOS) Lean Management program. The Better Practice Awards recognize partners who demonstrate leadership and innovation in energy efficiency and sustainability. The EOS program is a Lean Management initiative designed to identify, reduce, or eliminate waste within EnerSys’s operations. By using the EOS program, EnerSys plants across the globe have been able to more efficiently implement safety, health, environmental, quality and sustainability improvements, including scrap, water and gas reductions, energy savings and more.
The Better Plants Program is a U.S. Department of Energy initiative that works with leading U.S. manufacturers to set ambitious energy, water, waste, and carbon reduction goals and commit to reducing energy intensity by 25% over a 10-year period. EnerSys® joined the program in 2021 to identify opportunities that reduce energy usage and increase efficiency. Our Warrensburg, Richmond, Hays, Springfield 1 and Springfield 2 plants are the locations officially participating in the initiative, we’re working to replicate findings from these locations at other EnerSys manufacturing sites across the U.S. and beyond.
Troy Baxter, Director of Manufacturing Operations; Chad Chung, Engineering Manager I; and Abhishek Jani, EOS Manager from our Richmond, Kentucky location, traveled to Washington, D.C. to receive this prestigious award in person.

“Partners in the Better Plants Challenge are sharing their success and innovation to accelerate their energy efficiency. The Better Practice awards highlight unique efforts to make meaningful headway in reducing energy, water, waste and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Carolyn Snyder, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency at the U.S. Department of Energy.
Troy was also invited to Richmond’s City Commission meeting at City Hall, where EnerSys was recognized by Richmond mayor, Robert Blythe, for the Better Practice award. At the meeting, Troy was granted a key to the city of Richmond to celebrate the company’s commitment to being a good environmental steward in Richmond, and within the other communities in which we operate.
